Greenbelt River Valley Connector Program-Possible project funding for Centennial Park?

"Over the next three years, through a collaboration between The Greenbelt Foundation and Park People, the Greenbelt River Valley Connector Program will provide grants to support fifteen place-based community projects across the GTHA that will celebrate and enhance these natural valley areas. Each project is eligible to receive up to $25,000 in funding. Possibility flows – engage your community in the enjoyment and enhancement of your Greenbelt protected local urban river valley by submitting your project idea today! Applications due June 1st." I believe the Etobicoke Creek crosses through some of Centennial Park. If so this may be very worthwhile to look into for project funding.

Detroit firefighter fired for bringing watermelon to station

Last Monday, 41-year-old Robert Pattison went to introduce himself to his fellow firefighters at Engine 55 at Joy and Southfield in Detroit. Second Battallion Chief Shawn McCarty calls it a tradition for firefighters. "It's not mandatory, it's voluntary," he said. "You come in bearing gifts. The usual gift is doughnuts but you are allowed to bring whatever you want to bring in." And Pattison, a probationary firefighter, decided to bring a watermelon wrapped in a pink ribbon. We're told some African-American firefighters were instantly offended since 90 percent of the people who work at Engine 55 are black. "When you get your first detail at a firehouse you pretty much know what you are getting yourself into," said Patrick Trout. "So you would have to say it was probably a bad call." FOX 2: "Is it racially insensitive to bring a watermelon into a fire house?" "To some people," McCarty said. FOX 2 spoke to Pattison by phone who claims it was not a joke - and he did not mean to offend his fellow firefighters. But he clearly did. Fire Commissioner Eric Jones says the Fenton native was officially discharged. In a statement Jones says: "There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department. On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Engine 55, a trial firefighter (probationary employee) engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department. "After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the best course of action was to terminate the employment of this probationary employee." In a world where racial tensions run high, some tell me the trial firefighter should have known better. Trout doesn't know if he meant anything by it - but feels it was a bad choice. "For sure by far it was," The question is did DFD take it too far? FOX 2: "Should he have lost his job over a watermelon?" "I don't think so," McCarty said. "Between what he did and what was there are a few things that could have been done."

Trump rolls back access to free birth control

Donald Trump's government has issued a ruling that allows employers to opt out of providing free birth control to millions of Americans. The rule allows employers and insurers to decline to provide birth control if doing so violates their "religious beliefs" or "moral convictions". Fifty-five million women benefited from the Obama-era rule, which made companies provide free birth control. Before taking office, Mr Trump had pledged to eliminate that requirement. What happened? The mandate requiring birth control coverage had been a key feature of so-called Obamacare - President Obama's efforts to overhaul the US healthcare system. But the requirement included a provision that permitted religious institutions to forgo birth control coverage for their employees. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said on Friday it was important to expand which organisations can opt out and deny free contraceptive coverage.

Hawaii approves telescope on volcano sacred to indigenous people

A team of scientists won approval from Hawaii officials on Thursday to build a $1.4 billion telescope atop a volcano indigenous people consider sacred, but opponents vowed to continue fighting. The Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources voted 5-2 to allow construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on the summit of Mauna Kea on Hawaii’s Big Island, state officials said in a statement. Astronomers consider the summit one of the world’s best places to view the cosmos, while Native Hawaiians say the project would disturb holy ground crucial to their connection with ancestors and the heavens. A consortium of scientists, after selecting the site in 2009 and applying to build there, initially received construction permits from state officials in 2011. In 2015, the Hawaii Supreme Court voided that decision, saying officials did not follow the proper procedures for a “contested case hearing.” That forced the state board to re-evaluate the proposal with more input from opponents. The project calls for building one of the world’s largest telescopes atop the dormant volcano. “This was one of the most difficult decisions this board has ever made,” Suzanne Case, chairwoman of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, said in a statement. The 13,800 foot-tall (4,205 meters) volcano is already dotted with telescopes, the board noted in a 345-page decision paper.

Artificial Colors Are Back in Trix Because Nobody Liked Natural Ingredients

The maker of the iconic sugary breakfast cereal Trix is reintroducing artificial colors and flavorings after customers complained about the all-natural option, made using radishes, purple carrots, and turmeric. General Mills Inc., which also markets the kids' cereals Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms, as well as Häagen-Dazs ice cream, will start selling the classic version of Trix, made using the original recipe, alongside the more wholesome option in supermarkets starting in October, the Wall Street Journal reports. When General Mills pledged two years ago to remove artificial colors and flavors from all its cereal brands, many turned to social media to express outrage at the decision. Some accused the company of destroying their childhood cereal, while others described the new version of Trix as phoney and fraudulent.General Mills is just one of many major companies, along with Kraft Heinz, Subway, Nestle USA, Mars Inc. and more, that have committed to omitting artificial dyes and preservatives from their products. Many have been met with the same frustration expressed by Trix consumers.

Full and Fair Democracy

Why was Erwin Sniedzins not invited to participate in this mayoral debate? To ensure a free and fair election organizers must make sure that all ideas are vetted and all candidates are giving a chance to debate their ideas and solutions. People are being killed to prevent democracy & here in Toronto people are trying to control a democratic process
